The Tribune's Top-10 rankings had some of the biggest movement this week that they have had in years. After Tampa Bay Tech's stunning 14-7 victory against No. 1 Plant, the Panthers dropped to No. 3. Armwood, meanwhile, moved up a spot to No. 1 after the Hawks defeated Jefferson 28-9, and Sickles, which was idle this week, leaped two spots to No. 2, its highest ranking in the history of the Tribune's top 10. Giant-slayer Tampa Bay Tech jumped up three positions to No. 6.
The poll awards points for each place voted on by five panelists who cover the sport extensively in Hillsborough County for the Tampa Tribune/TBO: Mike Camunas, Jarrett Guthrie, Nick Williams, Scott Purks and Doug Jacobs. First place receives 10 points, followed by nine points for second place, and so on. First-place votes appear in parentheses following team totals.
1. Armwood (5-0) 50
Up Next: Idle
Comment: For the first time this year, the Hawks are No. 1 in the Tribune poll. Chances are sky high that they will stay there through the rest of the regular season.
2. Sickles (4-0) 45
Up Next: at Freedom (1-4)
Comment: A huge Class 7A-District 7 game against TBT looms on Nov. 1, but the Gryphons better not take the Patriots for granted.
3. Plant (3-1-1) 38
Up Next: at Riverview (2-2) Comment: Any time Plant gets defeated — which it did 14-7 to TBT on Friday — it's big news. Back-to-back Panthers losses would require even larger headlines.
4. Jefferson (3-1) 31
Up Next: at Leto (0-5)
Comment: Look out, Leto. The Dragons will be extra angry after an upsetting loss on Friday to Class 6A-District 8 foe Armwood.
5. Plant City (4-0) 29
Up Next: at East Bay (3-2)
Comment: Don't think East Bay doesn't have a chance in this Class 7A-District 8 matchup, because it does.
6. Tampa Bay Tech (3-1) 23
Up Next: at Steinbrenner (1-3)
Comment: The Titans are riding high after their historic victory against Plant. Now TBT must gather itself to stay focused.
7. Tampa Catholic (4-1) 22
Up Next: at Frostproof (4-1)
Comment: The Crusaders must travel deep into the orange groves of Frostproof to take on the Bulldogs. Never an easy task.
8. Hillsborough (2-2) 15
Up Next: at King (4-1)
Comment: The Terriers hope to keep cranking out Class 6A-District 8 victories while praying for a complete meltdown from either Jefferson and Armwood, which lead the district.
9. Newsome (3-2) 5
Up Next: Wharton (4-1)
Comment: A Wildcats victory would prove Wharton belongs in the Tribune top 10 — not Newsome. The Wolves, of course, can say the same thing.
10. Alonso (3-2) 3
Up Next: at Bloomingdale (2-2)
Comment: Another interesting Class 8A-District 6 game between two teams that appear better than their records indicate.
