Football: Tribune's Top 10

Published:   |   Updated: September 9, 2013 at 09:08 AM

The Tribune's Top-10 rankings had plenty of movement in the season's second week, with Wharton and Robinson dropping out after tough losses and Tampa Catholic jumping in. Hats off to TC, which Friday defeated a talent-laden team from Clearwater Central Catholic, 13-10 in overtime. Newsome also moved up four spots from No. 9 to No. 5 after solid victories over Tampa Bay Tech and Gaither to start the Wolves' season.

The poll awards points for each place, voted on by five panelists who cover the sport extensively in Hillsborough County for the Tampa Tribune/TBO: Mike Camunas, Jarrett Guthrie, Nick Williams, Scott Purks and Doug Jacobs. First place receives 10 points, followed by nine points for second place, and so on. First-place votes appear in parentheses following team totals.

1. Plant (1-0-1) (5) 50

Up Next: at Gaither (1-1) Comment: Plant continues to look stronger with each passing week. This may not bode well for Gaither, which struggled last week against Newsome.

2. Armwood (2-0) 45

Up Next: at Hillsborough (0-1) Comment: It's early in the season, but this is a must-win Class 6A-District 8 game for both teams.

3. Jefferson (2-0) 40

Up Next: at Robinson (0-2) Comment: The Dragons better get their shotgun snaps and kicking game under control. It would be a shame to have those things derail a red-hot season.

4. Sickles (2-0) 33

Up Next: at Newsome (2-0) Comment: Running back Ray Ray McCloud has more than 400 yards rushing after two games. Will he eclipse 500 after three? 600? ...

5. Newsome (2-0) 28

Up Next: Sickles (2-0) Comment: The Wolves offense keeps rolling, rolling, rolling along. Can Sickles, which has given up only 14 points, slow Newsome?

6. Hillsborough (0-1) 27

Up Next: Armwood (2-0) Comment: Did we mention this is a must-win? A Terrier loss could make for a very long final eight games.

7. Plant City (2-0) 22

Up Next: idle Comment: The Raiders have some of the best talent in the county and are capable of beating just about anybody on any given night.

8. Tampa Catholic (1-1) 15

Up Next: at Tarpon Springs (2-0) Comment: The Crusaders proved they are for real after defeating highly touted Clearwater Central Catholic 13-10 in overtime Friday night.

9. Gaither (1-1) 6

Up Next: Plant (1-0-1) Comment: Cowboys still haven't found an answer for Newsome's high-octane offense (see 38-7 loss to the Wolves on Friday). Now they get — gulp — Plant.

10. Tampa Bay Tech (0-1) 5

Up Next: at Durant (0-2) Comment: The Titans got a week off to lick their wounds after a season-opening loss to Newsome. Now they will try to take their frustrations out on the Cougars.
