Prep football: Tribune Top 10 through Week 9

Published:   |   Updated: October 27, 2013 at 11:32 AM

After a couple of upsets on Friday — Gaither defeating Tampa Bay Tech 14-10 and Durant defeating Hillsborough 32-30 — the Tribune's Top 10 underwent some shakeups in the last six positions. The loss dropped Hillsborough out of the Top 10 along with Strawberry Crest, which had a one-week stint at No. 9 before losing to Plant City. Gaither jumped back in at No. 9, while Alonso, after a couple of solid performances the past two weeks, takes up the No. 10 position.

Football: Tribune Top 10 through Week 9

The poll awards points for each place voted on by five panelists who cover the sport extensively in Hillsborough County for the Tampa Tribune/TBO: Mike Camunas, Jarrett Guthrie, Nick Williams, Scott Purks and Doug Jacobs.

First-place votes receive 10 points, followed by nine points for second place, and so on. First-place votes appear in parenthesis following team totals.

1. Armwood (8-0) 50 (5)

Up Next: at Chamberlain (4-5)

Comment: The chances of Armwood finishing the season undefeated are very high. But then Chamberlain has thrown a scare into several teams this year (see last-minute comeback by Jefferson on Friday). Hawks better beware.

2. Plant (7-1-1) 45

Up Next: at Alonso (5-3) Comment: The Ravens have looked better and better as the season has progressed. But have they improved enough to give Plant a game? Maybe.

3. Sickles (7-1) 39

Up Next: Tampa Bay Tech (6-2) Comment: Sickles can seal up the Class 7A-District 7 title with a victory. A loss would throw the district into chaos with TBT, Gaither and the Gryphons all in the fight.

4. Jefferson (7-1) 36

Up Next: at Blake (2-7) Comment: Whew … barely got away from Chamberlain with a victory. Dragons better get serious against the Yellow Jackets.

5. Tampa Catholic (7-1) 30

Up Next: Bishop McLaughlin (1-7) Comment: TC is favored to go undefeated in Class 3A-District 4. Not an easy thing to do.

6. Plant City (6-2) 28

Up Next: at Brandon (3-5) Comment: Which Plant City team will show up? Raider fans hope it's the one that steamrolled Strawberry Crest on Friday.

7. Jesuit (5-3) 20

Up Next: Middleton (2-6)

Comment: There are three teams in Class 5A-District 9. Jesuit can seal the district title with a victory over the Tigers.

8. Tampa Bay Tech (6-2) 13

Up Next: at Sickles (7-1) Comment: TBT has proven it can beat just about anybody (see defeat of Plant) and lose to a team everyone thought the Titans would beat, Gaither. Now TBT is in a must-win situation in this Class 7A-District 7 showdown.

9. Gaither (4-4) 7

Up Next: Steinbrenner (3-5) Comment: Few times has a team been more up and down than Gaither this season. All that aside, if the Cowboys beat the Warriors they will be 4-1 in Class 7A-District 7 and in solid position for the playoffs.

10. Alonso (5-3) 5

Up Next: Plant (7-1-1) Comment: The Ravens have no choice if they want to make the playoffs. They must win this Class 8A-District 6 game against Plant. Never an easy task.

Also receiving votes: Carrollwood Day School, Hillsborough, Seffner Christian
