Football preview: Top Pasco defensive linemen

Published:

With football season approaching, we’re taking a look at the top players at their positions. Call it our big board, if you will, and we’ll be naming the top players in Pasco County from receivers to linemen to kickers. Today: Defensive linemen.

Eric Bennett, Wesley Chapel, Sr.

This East Bay transfer had a team-high 12.5 sacks for the Indians and should lead a deep Wildcats defensive line.

Shymere Carter, Anclote, Sr.

Top returner on the line had three sacks, 45 tackles, two fumble recoveries two interceptions for the Sharks in 2012.

Andrew Ivie, Pasco, Jr.

A big kid — 6-foot-3, 260 pounds — coming off an injury as he looks to live up to the Ivie name by anchoring a very large defensive line.

Jordan Mutcherson, Wiregrass Ranch, Sr.

At 6-foot-2, 230-pound, can also drop back and play linebacker, as shown when he broke up a pass and recorded a sack vs. Sunlake in the Bulls spring game.

Shaheed Salmon, Land O’ Lakes, Sr.

Big, disruptive pass rusher led Gators with 6.5 sacks, plus added 40 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Honorable mention: Anclote: Stephen Bucher; Gulf: Andrew Marshall; Hudson: Alex Munson; Land O’ Lakes: Cedric Lowe; Mitchell: Connor Murchie; Pasco: Jacob Schildt; Ridgewood: Chris Branfield; River Ridge: Alex Rodriguez; Sunlake: Trevor Highnote, Nick Larry; Wesley Chapel: Alex Greer; Wiregrass Ranch: Austin Stroup, Yori McMillian; Zephyrhills: Devon Long.
