Defensive backs lead Wolves’ efforts

Led by seniors Darius McGrew and Zac Slater, Newsome’s secondary unit, which also includes Bruce Anderson, Aaron Wade and Ramsey Bennett, is a group head coach Ken Hiscock said is solid across the field and will anchor the defense.

“They have been here four years and they understand our scheme,” Hiscock said. “They play fast.”

Last season, McGrew recorded 35 tackles with an interception while Slater played in the first four games, only to miss the remainder of the season with a broken shoulder.

“Darius is a great cornerback,” said teammate Bruce Anderson. “His vision and reaction time, he’s able to make up for it. Zach knows how to read the offense. He can lock down his side.”

SUPPLY

Versatility

The Wolves have a number of players who can play both sides of the ball. Junior Bruce Anderson and Ramsey Bennett will play running back and senior Aaron Wade, a standout defensive back, is also expected to be Newsome’s top receiver.

“We’re going to put the best 11 (players) on the field,” Newsome coach Ken Hiscock said.

“We have so many weapons we can put in different positions,” said Anderson, who moved from California as a sophomore.

Anderson will play in the backfield with junior Chris Bryant, who played running back, defensive back and kick returner as a sophomore.

Wade was Newsome’s top receiver last season with 255 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive lineman

Ranger Roberts, a 6-foot-4, 257-pound junior, is expected to be a force to reckon with on the defensive line. As a sophomore, Roberts had 24 tackles and one sack.

“He can move,” Hiscock said. “He’s only a junior so he has another year to grow into his body.”

DEMAND

Experience

Newsome graduated a slew of players, namely quarterback/linebacker Will Worth from last year’s playoff team. The Wolves graduated key members of the offensive line and have a new quarterback in junior Spencer Preston, who completed only three passes last year.

“A lot of our young guys don’t have a lot of experience,” Hiscock said.

Leadership

The players are just as confident in their new signal caller.

“Spencer is a great quarterback,” Anderson said. “He’s a good leader and he works hard. He always works hard.”

Spencer, who started on JV as a freshman, will have help as he transitions into a leadership role.

“Wade is a help,” he said. “He’s a leader by example.”
