HUDSON — Jill McElderry took over Fivay’s pitching duties in the third inning Thursday, and in five shutout innings she struck out 14 and allowed three hits in a 9-3 victory against Zephyrhills.
Fivay coach Greg Bollinger remembers a game from a couple seasons ago when his ace McElderry, then a sophomore, struck out 17 batters against Zephyrhills and lost the game.
Fivay (3-1) took a 1-0 lead, but Zephyrhills (2-3) scored three runs off Falcons starter Cheyenne Gainey.
McElderry drove in two runs in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 3, then took over pitching duties in the top of the third and was lights out.
At the plate she went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs.
The Falcons broke open the game in the sixth, scoring four runs for a 9-3 lead.
Cassidee McCullough pitched 51⁄3 innings for Zephyrhills and had six strikeouts.
