GIBSONTON — East Bay used two big punt returns to overcome an upset bid from Brandon to keeps its playoff hopes in tact in the fifth Class 7A-District 8 game to be decided by less than three points or in overtime this season.
Brandon took the opening drive 75 yards and scored when Dontae McGee ran it in from 5 yards to put the Eagles up 7-0.
East Bay scored 15 points in the second quarter, all by its special teams. Christian Ashford had two punt returns for touchdowns, both from 60 yards. Eric Morgan added a 28-yard field goal and East Bay led 15-7 at halftime.
Brandon took the lead in the fourth quarter on back-to-back touchdown runs from Jonathan Jones. His second was from 67 yards and put Brandon up 21-15.
On its next drive, East Bay took the ball 63 yards and Chris Greene scored the winning touchdown from 10 yards one play after East Bay converted a fourth-and-5.
East Bay’s offense was evenly distributed with Greene rushing for 51 yards, Randen Cortez rushing for 42 yards and Chris Carpentier rushing for 41. Jones had 153 yards rushing for the Eagles.
The game had to be moved to East Bay after a water main break this week made Brandon’s stadium unusable.
