PLANT CITY — Brandon’s 40-yard, game-winning field goal attempt went wide right as time expired, giving Durant the victory and sparking a wild celebration from the Cougars’ sideline.
The Cougars won after a wild rally set the stage for an even wilder comeback attempt from the Eagles.
Down 10-6 in the fourth quarter, Durant cornerback Eric Davis nearly intercepted a ball with a clear shot at Brandon’s end zone ahead of him. On the next play, Davis returned a Brandon punt for a touchdown, only for it to be called back for a block in the back penalty.
“It was easy for me to forget my drop,” Davis said. “Coach always tells us to forget the last play.”
The Cougars then marched 45 yards to take the lead, highlighted by Aaron Zofnas’ diving touchdown grab with 1:04 left to play. Brandon blocked the point-after attempt to leave the score at 12-10.
Brandon quarterback Brandon Jones then hurled a 46-yard prayer of a pass that was caught by Allen Lewis at the Durant 23-yard line, allowing for a field-goal attempt with 2 seconds left in the game.
“This is pretty exciting,” Durant coach Mike Gottman said. “It’s about time that we caught a break. By the law of averages, we were due for a break and this is our time.”
