Plant High’s girls cross country team traveled a couple of hours south Saturday morning and promptly ran great times against great competition at the North Port Invitational.
The Panthers ran so well they took third place with 120 points and finished highest among Class 4A teams in the 26-team large-school division.
Class 3A Estero and Sarasota finished first and second, with 40 and 97 points, respectively.
Individually, Plant was led by Bailey Sullivan, who finished sixth on the 5k course in 18 minutes, 51.9 seconds, just ahead of teammate Anna Montgomery, who placed seventh in 19:01.8.
Robinson’s Maddie Hull was next among Hillsborough County competitors, finishing 17th in 19:44, followed by Plant’s Erica Oosterhout, who was 21st in 19:52. Newsome’s Emily Zwijacz was next in 22nd in 19:52.9.
“Overall, I am very pleased,” Plant coach Roy Harrison said. “(Sullivan) ran about 40 seconds faster today than she did at this meet last year.”
In the girls’ small-school division, Seffner Christian’s Celi Guzman led Hillsborough County with a 10th-place finish in 21:11.
On the boys’ side in the large-school division, Plant’s Jack Guyton led Hillsborough County with a ninth-place finish in 16:04. Robinson’s Jack Rogers was the next local runner in 14th at 16:25.1.
Plant’s boys placed fifth as a team with 153 points, and Robinson was ninth with 292.
Among the small-division schools, Seffner Christian’s Noah Perkins placed fourth in 16:47.9.

Local runners shine at Ryun Invitational
Chamberlain’s Maggie Parrish continued her strong start to the season with a fourth-place finish Saturday in the girls varsity division at Lakeland’s Jim Ryun Invitational in 20:05.70.
Chamberlain was sixth in the girls’ team race with a combined team time of 1:52:02, which is how the Ryun meet determines team places.
In the boys’ competition, Chamberlain’s Cameron Purvis led Hillsborough County competitors by finishing 14th in 17:39.
The Chiefs finished 11th as a team with a combined time of 1:40:19.80, followed by Plant City in 12th at 1:41:53.00.
