Led by Abdin Fator, the Sickles High boys cross country team captured the Armwood Invitational at USF's The Claw golf course on Friday.
Twenty-seven schools from across Hillsborough and Pinellas counties participated in the first high school cross country meet in many years held at the golf course.
Sickles emerged victorious with 61 points, followed by Bloomingdale (90), Berkeley Prep (111), Riverview (142) and Chamberlain (171).
Countryside's Paul McKenna pulled away in the final mile, crossing the line first in the boys race in 16:14. McKenna held back in the early going, which found Middleton freshman Daniel Dean, who won the Hillsborough County freshman/sophomore meet Tuesday, leading a pack of eight through the mile mark in 5:10.
Fator, who won the Invitational race at the pre-state meet at FSU last weekend, then took over, opening a 20-meter lead just past the 2k mark. McKenna closed on Fator, pulling even with him before making his move in the third mile. Fator held on to finish second in 16:29, followed by Ross Porter of Shorecrest, Dean, and Jacob Endrulat of Keswick Christian.
In the girls race, Shorecrest won with 50, followed by Wharton (93), Berkeley Prep (123), Chamberlain (125) and Bloomingdale (131).
Alex Eaton of Shorecrest led from the start and cruised to victory in 19:30 on the 5k two loop course.
Teammate Olivia Rovin (19:40) was second, followed by Newsome's Stephanie Cajas (20:09) and Rachel Cazares (20:32), and Chamberlain's Maggie Parrish (20:35).
Steinbrenner junior defender Miranda Gonzalez said she has verbally committed to play at the University of Tampa. Gonzalez earned All-Hillsborough County first-team honors in her first two seasons.
Gonzalez will join her sister, Cici Gonzalez, at UT in 2014.
