Hillsborough County high school coaches were honored Saturday night at the 24th annual coaches’ banquet, hosted by the New York Yankees and the Steinbrenner family.
Wharton High track coach Wes Newton addressed the crowd, encouraging today’s student-athletes to look to the great athletes of the past to know what it takes to succeed.
Steinbrenner High baseball coach John Crumbley, who has more than 31 years in coaching, won a new car donated by Ford. Other prizes included round-trip tickets to anywhere in the United States, season ticket packages to the Tampa Bay Storm and Tampa Bay Lightning, use of a luxury suite at Tropicana Field, and $30,000 in cash and trips to New York and Las Vegas.
Deemed the “Coaches Prom,” the event started almost a quarter a century ago by the late George Steinbrenner. The former Yankees boss once was an assistant football coach at Northwestern and Purdue universities, and knew the importance of coaches teaching sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, loyalty and dedication through their sports programs.
