Countryside comes back, then holds off Lakewood

Published:

— Going into the season opener, Countryside was the only Pinellas team Lakewood quarterback Ryan Davis had not beaten in his career.

After Friday night’s game, Davis will have to live with the same result.

Down by nine points at the start of the second half, the Cougars clawed back and held on in the final quarter for a 25-20 victory.

Lakewood came storming out of the gate on the first possession, with Davis leading an 80-yard drive. He went 4-for-5 for 58 yards and rushed for 15 yards.

The drive was capped by Adrian Adams’ 15-yard catch. Adams, who had 40 receiving yards on the drive, broke out of a slant route and kept his eyes on a tipped ball that fell into his hands. He caught the ball behind the defense and waltzed into the end zone to put Lakewood up two minutes into the game.

Davis continued to shred the Cougars the rest of the half, and he had some highlight-reel plays to evade the Cougars’ constant pressure. The biggest run was a 30-yarder down the left sideline, and he eluded four defenders to score at the end of the first quarter. He rushed for 120 yards and threw for 110 more in the first half.

The Cougars were inside the red zone twice in the half but turned it over both times.

The second half was the Dante Satcher Show, as he posted 260 yards and two touchdowns.

After Countryside quarterback Trent Chmelik scored on a 2-yard run up the middle in the third quarter, the Cougars gained the momentum.

Then Satcher took over. He scored on a 17-yard counter run untouched at the start of the fourth. Midway through the fourth he busted a 65-yard touchdown run up the right sideline, blowing by defenders.

Davis answered with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the fourth. But down three with less than four minutes to play, Lakewood was flagged for an illegal substitution on fourth down, and the Cougars drained three minutes off the clock.

The Spartans got one more shot with less than a minute left, but a bad snap went into the end zone, and Davis fell on it for the safety.
