CHAMBERLAIN 14

EAST BAY 11

— Chamberlain’s new hurry-up spread offense might need a little bit of work, but the Chiefs’ defense appeared ready for the regular season, holding East Bay’s powerful rushing offense to 158 total yards in a 14-11 victory.

Though the teams combined for eight turnovers (four each), Chamberlain made the most of its takeaways. D.J. Daniels recovered the second of three lost fumbles by the Indians and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown for the game’s first points. Daniels was also affective on offense, catching eight passes for 102 yards.

The Chiefs would respond after the Daniels TD return, driving to the Chamberlain 2-yard line before a fourth-down penalty forced them to settle for a 24-yard Michael Bishop field goal.

Chamberlain extended its lead when backup quarterback Reggie Wester, in for an injured Seth Jordan, found Eric Gravely on a 3-yard pass to cap a 77-yard drive. Wester finished with 182 yards passing on the night.

Though East Bay pulled within three points on a James Hambrick touchdown run and Gaej Walker’s 2-point conversion run, the Indians’ final drives never threatened. Daniel Martinez intercepted a pass on the final offensive play to seal the Chamberlain win.
