TAMPA — First year Chamberlain coach Cam Jones admitted his Chiefs weren’t ready for their season opener — a loss to Gaither. The offense was too young, the personnel lent itself to quick handoffs and tosses, and Jones needed to find someone to spark the team’s scoring.
That someone has made himself known as junior Daishaun Roberts followed his 170-yard performance in last week’s win at Leto with a 135-yard, three-touchdown effort in front of the home crowd, leading the Chiefs past Lennard.
“He didn’t play running back until last week,” Jones said of Roberts. “I knew he was an athlete and ... I wanted to get a guy like that plenty of touches.”
Chamberlain started well as Roberts took a ball up the middle, then cut outside and scored from 50 yards, but Lennard answered and took a 7-6 lead on a Diontae Johnson 16-yard connection with Xavier McBean in the second quarter. Lennard stretched the lead to eight on the next drive as Tre Jones stripped the Chiefs ball carrier and took it in for a 20-yard score.
However, Chamberlain righted things on offense and picked up some big stops on defense as Roberts added a pair of touchdowns, before James A. Martin salted away the win with a 13-yard touchdown.
