CLEARWATER — It took almost the entire first quarter for Clearwater Central Catholic to score, but once the Marauders put points on the board, they scored in bunches as last year’s Class 3A state finals runner-up rolled to a home victory.
Marauders quarterback Jeff Smith led the way with 132 yards in the air and 66 yards on the ground, accounting for two touchdowns.
Smith scored his first touchdown on a 15-yard run with a little less than four minutes left in the first quarter to give the Marauders a 7-0 lead. After Jon Doughtery scored on a 1-yard run a few seconds into the second quarter, the officials stopped the game due to lightning.
When the contest resumed after a 21-minute delay, the Marauders tallied two touchdowns within four minutes of each other. C.J. Cotman scored on a 3-yard run and Smith then connected with Dilan Scargle to give CCC a 28-0 lead going into halftime and the Marauders never looked back.
