Carrollwood Day 40, Cambridge Chr. 20

TAMPA — One play — a 90-yard return off a fumble for a touchdown as time expired in the first half — completely changed the complexion of Carrollwood Day’s victory vs. Cambridge Christian.

Yes, there were other big plays, including touchdown passes of 55 and 29 yards from CDS quarterback Taylor King, but none came close to the impact of the scoop-and-score play by CDS linebacker Dominic Cuono.

Before Cuono picked up the fumble and took off on his 90-yard run, Cambridge QB Garrett Young appeared headed for a TD run of his own — a touchdown that would have tied the score at 14 just before halftime. Instead, CDS went into halftime leading 20-7.

“That took the wind right out of (Cambridge) and gave us a huge boost,” CDS coach Lane McLaughlin said. “I think it took some wind out of (Cuono) as well because that was a long run.”

The victory improves CDS to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in Class 2A-District 5, all but assuring a playoff spot for the Patriots as the district runner-up. Cambridge fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3.
