TAMPA -

The Brandon wrestling team is well on its way to winning another county championship, but the battle for second place should be a good one when the 2009 Hillsborough County Championships at Wharton conclude today.

The heavily favored Eagles were perfect on Friday at the county meet, advancing all 14 wrestlers to the semifinals to finish Day 1 with 176 points. However, the next four teams are separated by just 16 points, with Durant (107 points) narrowly holding the runner-up position over Alonso (105), Bloomingdale (97) and Riverview (91).

Alonso advanced the second-most individuals to today's semifinals, with six Ravens earning a spot. Durant, Riverview, Bloomingdale and Armwood, which was sixth with 84.5 points, each advanced five.

There were no major upsets on the first day, as the top seeds in each weight class - Brandon's Keith LeFevre (103 pounds), Ryan Renkey (112), Rossi Bruno (119), Tyler Liberatore (125), Clark Glass (130), Eric Grajales (135), Kevin Timothy (140), Joe Cozart (145), Wally Figaro (152) and Zaq Berridge (171), Bloomingdale's Chris Figari (160), Riverview's Rafael Rivera (189) and Ryan Gascon (285) and Durant's Marshon Shoemake (215) - each advanced to today's semifinals. But, there are quite a few intriguing matchups scheduled for today.

Among them are both 189-pound semifinals. Riverview's Rivera, last year's 189-pound runner-up, will square off in one semifinal against Gaither's Aaron Little, who got past last year's 171-pound champ, Plant City's Travis Vollick, in Friday's quarterfinals via injury default. Brandon's Mike Ettore, last year's 152-pound runner-up, will face Alonso's Kendall Ivy, last year's 189-pound county champ, in the other semifinal.
