ST. PETERSBURG — Trevon Walters ran for 290 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bradenton Manatee to a victory against Class 8A-District 7 rival St. Petersburg.
Manatee set the tone early with points on its opening possession. After St. Petersburg was forced to punt on its first possession, Walters and quarterback Joshua Meyer led the Hurricanes on a 56-yard, nine-play drive that culminated in Meyer’s 1-yard TD run.
St. Petersburg stayed within striking distance for a good portion of the game thanks to big plays on defense and special teams. Davon Conyers blocked a punt, leading to a first-quarter TD, and defensive back Jake Moore had a 95-yard interception return for a TD that made it 23-13 midway through the third quarter.
Walters made it 30-13 with a 5-yard TD run. He made many big plays, including runs of 54 and 64 yards in the second half.
Meyer passed for 115 yards and rushed for 42. Marquel Hines a 70-yard punt return for a TD.
