LAND O' LAKES -

Before Bloomingdale shortstop McKenzie Carter stepped to the plate in the top of the 12th inning against Land O' Lakes, Bulls coach Mike Clamon implored: "You gotta just hit the ball. Stop taking the big swing."

Three pitches later, the sophomore yanked an 0-2 pitch into left field, scoring Destani Frye from third, giving Bloomingdale a 1-0 victory in the Class 5A-Region 2 semifinals.

Neither pitcher let up during the extended play. Bulls starter Kaylyn Camacho had 20 strikeouts, while Gators ace Michelle Bradley had 14.

6A-2: Riverview moves to semis

RIVERVIEW - Riverview had a chance for a big first inning and the Sharks took advantage.

Bianka Bell's two-run single highlighted a four-run first and Riverview held on for a 5-3 victory against Mitchell in a Class 6A-Region 2 quarterfinal.

Freshman Taylor McCoy allowed the first three runners to reach base in the fifth as Mitchell cut the lead to 5-3 on Olivia Kline's two-run double, but she dug in to retire nine of the last 10 batters to seal the win. McCoy allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked one.

5A-3: Chamberlain ousts East Lake

TAMPA - Chamberlain coach Bob Diez doesn't worry much about his team's defense.

With four Division I commitments in the field and a Division II pitcher with a 0.24 ERA controlling the mound, what's there to worry about?

Chamberlain (26-2) mustered one hit through the first three innings, but junior first baseman and USF commitment Stephanie Medina blasted a home run in the fourth inning and junior catcher and Penn State commitment Kasie Hatfield drove in two runs in the fourth to give the Chiefs a 3-0 win and a spot in the Class 5A-Region 2 semifinals.

Senior pitcher Alex Hartshorn (18-2) threw a one-hitter with no walks to earn the win.

5A-3: Plant tops Palm Harbor

PALM HARBOR - In a game as close and tense as the score indicates, Plant edged Palm Harbor 1-0 in the Class 5A-Region 3quarterfinals.

The Panthers (21-6) pushed a run across in the second inning and made it stand up. Catcher Ashley Schnitzler was 2-for-3 and drove in the lone run. Her single scored Lizzy Mischo.

Plant senior right-hander Kayla Suskauer was tough, retiring the first nine batters she faced and working out of jams in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.

6A-2: Countryside topples East Bay

CLEARWATER - East Bay junior Kayla Cox struck out 13 of the 20 batters she faced and allowed one hit and one walk through six innings, but it wasn't enough as the Indians fell to Countryside, 1-0, in the Class 6A-Region 2 quarterfinals.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cox was working on a no-hitter when Countryside's Ayanna Andrews tripled, scoring Shatia Wallace, who reached on a passed ball.

5A-2: River Ridge bounces Newsome

LITHIA - Newsome's season didn't end suddenly in the Class 5A-Region 2 quarterfinals. It was more of a slow burn, followed by a sputter and then ... a last gasp.

The final breath came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, trailing by a run with runners on first and second. That's when Jenn Owens lined a shot to the right side, only to have the ball snagged off the infield dirt for the last out.

Final score: River Ridge 2, Newsome 1.

Newsome (23-6) scored its run in the third inning, but collected only one hit in the process.
