VALRICO — Chris Wonsley and Alan Yearby returned interceptions for touchdowns as Bloomingdale held off Newsome to stay alive in the Class 8A-District 6 playoff race.
Tommy McLaughlin completed 16 of 26 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown for Bloomingdale (5-3, 3-1), which can earn a playoff spot with a victory over Wharton next week. Logan Crouse caught seven passes for 73 yards and scored the Bulls’ other touchdown.
Wonsley picked off a short pass and zipped 67 yards to give Bloomingdale a 10-0 lead with 7:35 left in the second quarter. Newsome (4-5, 1-3) responded as Chris Bryant returned the kickoff 55 yards and scored six plays later on a 3-yard run.
Bloomingdale capitalized on a Newsome fumble as McLaughlin hit Crouse for a 14-yard score with 1:40 left in the half. Yearby sealed it midway through the final quarter, picking off a pass and sprinting down the sideline 52 yards for a touchdown.
Newsome rushed for 146 yards, but Bloomingdale did not give up any long runs.
“That was our biggest fear as a coaching staff.” Bulls coach John Booth said. “We stressed securing the outside and had our linebackers step up in the middle.”
