Bishop McLaughlin had a big win Tuesday against Class 3A Tampa Catholic and has 3A Berkeley Prep looming Monday. But the Hurricanes still have Class 2A-District 9 games to play if they want to advance in the state playoffs.
Coach Nick Rodriguez knows it's tough to get up every day but if Bishop McLaughlin is going to make that run at the region tournament, it has to happen.
The Hurricanes overcame a sluggish start and some erratic pitching to defeat host Indian Rocks Christian 9-5 and move to 2-0 in 2A-9 play.
"I thought we were a little distracted in the beginning," Rodriguez said. "But our senior provided the leadership we needed and we won the game."
After Indian Rocks Christian (3-3, 0-1) scored in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by Alex Winkle and John McKnight, the Hurricanes took a 4-1lead in the top of the third on singles by Mike Bennett, Taylor McGillis and Chad High and a triple by Mike Gonzalez. Gonzalez also hit a home run in the sixth.
But Bishop McLaughlin couldn't hold that lead as the Golden Eagles sent nine batters to the plate, scoring four unearned runs to regain the lead at 5-4. Bishop came right back in the top of the fourth, scoring two unearned runs to take the lead for good.
Sophomore David Heintz pitched five innings of relief to earn the win, giving up two unearned runs on three hits (all in the third inning).
