After a slow start, Berkeley Prep rolled during the final three quarters in a 76-49 win against Strawberry Crest on Saturday in the Bright House Sports Network Holiday Shootout title game at Clearwater High.
"They matched up with us really well in what we were trying to do," Berkeley Prep coach Bobby Reinhart said. "They beat us down the floor a lot. They got their fair share of loose balls and offensive rebounds."
Marshall Holmes (23 points, tournament MVP) and Justin Gray (13 points) led the way for Berkeley. With Jacob Mathis getting the ball to Holmes and Gray for key shots, the Buccaneers pulled away.
"They are a north-and-south team," Gray said of Strawberry Crest's run-and-gun style.
But it was that style that may have doomed the Chargers, who were playing their ninth game in 14 days.
"We had fresh legs," Strawberry Crest coach Andre Lewis. "It was going right by the score but we left too many points on the floor with too many missed layups and missed shots. I think their legs took over. So many games (in a short span) finally took their toll."
