TAMPA — Coming off a four-game losing streak, a matchup with one-win Bishop McLaughlin was exactly what Berkeley Prep needed.
Playing in front of a homecoming crowd at Stanford J. Newman Stadium, the Bucs played vastly different from their professional counterparts by rolling over the visitors. Seven different players scored TDs for the hosts as Berkeley won for the first time since a Sept. 6 victory against Victory Christian.
Gordon Stetson led the Bucs with 86 rushing yards on eight carries, including all five on the opening drive that began at midfield and ended with Stetson scoring on a 3-yard run. The Buccaneers (3-4, 1-3) finished with 265 yards on the ground, including 196 in the first half, while holding the Hurricanes (1-6, 0-4) to 15 rushing yards.
After forcing the Hurricanes to punt on a three-and-out on their first series, Bucs quarterback Brad Mayes connected with Cade Weldon on the first play from scrimmage, resulting in a 35-yard TD to give Berkeley a 14-0 lead. Weldon, the son of former FSU standout QB Casey Weldon, also completed a pass in the third quarter to Charlie Pennington for a 55-yard score.
