Berkeley Prep 27, Victory Christian 22

LAKELAND — Berkeley Prep cornerback Michael Hicks accounted for two touchdowns — an opening kickoff score and a pick-6 — to help lead the Buccaneers past the Victory Christian Storm.

The game was delayed by an hour because of lightning in the area.

Bucs quarterback Brad Mayes completed eight passes for 109 yards and one touchdown. His lone touchdown came with 5:56 left in the first quarter to help extend his team’s lead to 17-0.

His favorite target on the night was 6-foot-4 receiver Jacob Mathis, who caught four passes — all in the first half — for 82 yards. Three of his four receptions came on third-and-long, each giving his team a first down.

Berkeley (2-0) was able to jump out to a large lead with help from Victory Christian’s woeful special teams. The Storm fumbled the ensuing kickoff following the Hicks score. That eventually led to a 28-yard field goal by Austin Iglehart. Mayes’ touchdown pass came after a Storm muffed punt put the Bucs on the Victory 33-yard line.

The Bucs take on Orlando Lake Highland Prep on Friday at home.
