TAMPA — Neither Berkeley Prep nor Brandon entered Friday’s contest at the Buccaneers’ stadium with a chance to play in the postseason, but both teams competed like it was the playoffs.
Facing a third-and-goal on the Buccaneers’ 9-yard-line, the Eagles were penalized on a grounding call with less than five seconds left, ending the game due to the run off of the clock. The referees convened to discuss whether Brandon quarterback Brandon Jones was out of the pocket when his throw sailed out of bounds along the Eagles’ sideline, but they ultimately verified the call.
Jones had been electric throughout the game, rushing for 210 yards on 11 carries, including touchdowns of 75 yards and 80 yards. The senior play-caller also passed for 65 yards on eight of 18 for the Eagles (3-7).
The Bucs (5-4) were led by Gordon Stetson, who rushed for 106 yards on 23 carries, and Brad Mayes, who passed for 151 yards.
Mayes, who had opened the game’s scoring on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, gave the Buccaneers the go-ahead TD and eventual game-winning score when he connected with Jacob Mathis for a 36-yard catch-and-run into the end zone with a little over 10 minutes left.
