The wild recruiting ride for C.J. Bennett is finally over.
Alonso High's quarterback and the reigning Guy Toph Award winner committed to South Alabama during a visit to the school Friday.
South Alabama will be making the transition into the Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A), and Bennett likes that he will be part of that and also that he will be working with former USF assistant Greg Gregory, South Alabama's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
"I have a history with Coach Gregory, and it just feels right," Bennett said of his decision.
A Tribune All-Hillsborough County second-team selection last season, Bennett chose South Alabama over Wyoming and Murray State.
One of the top passers in Hillsborough County the past two seasons, Bennett verbally committed to Wyoming last summer but changed his mind midway through his senior season.
Bennett led the county in passing in 2008 with 3,017 yards and was second in the county last season with 2,385 yards.
He was featured on a reality TV show "The Ride" with seven other quarterbacks from across the country who competed for a spot in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Game. Bennett made it to the finals of the competition and participated in an All-Star Game in Hawaii.
