Tampa Bay area weightlifters can take part in a meet next month in Pasco County.
UR Cross Fit in Trinity is sponsoring a USA Weightlifting Open on April 26 at its facility. River Ridge High girls weightlifting coach Mike DeGennaro is serving as meet director.
“We’re having four sessions,” DeGennaro said. “Two of the sessions for male and female lifters are part of a USAW sanctioned meet. Two sessions are unsanctioned to test your strength against USA standards.”
The meet will serve as a national youth qualifier.
Registration closes April 20. Interested participants can go to the Team FL Pasco Facebook page or contact DeGennaro at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The registration charges will vary depending on age groups.
The meet is open to lifters ranging in age from 11 on up.
“It can be as young as can be,’’ the coach said. “It is for all ages, men, females and children.
Team FL Pasco is a local youth weightlifting team. There are 15 members, including boys, girls and adults.
“We are trying to promote the sport of weightlifting,’’ he said. “Cross Fit includes snatch and clean and jerk.
“There hasn’t been a sanctioned meet in the Tampa Bay area. My girls normally have to travel to Orlando, Venice. I want to get the local people involved. Maybe we can convert them to USA Weightlifting.”
DeGennaro has been coaching girls weightlifting for 15 years and has sent 52 girls to the FHSAA girls state weightlifting meet. His lifters have won 10 medals, including one state championship.
State champion and two-time USA Weightlifting national champion Alexis LiCalsi graduated from River Ridge in 2013 and is competing at East Tennessee State University.
