Spring two-a-days: Alonso, Berkeley Prep

Alonso

COACH: Brian Emanuel

2011 RECORD: 6-4

KEY LOSSES: RB Brandon Holloway, WR Eddie Castillo, LB Marcus Neuman, DE Calen Crowder, FS Jordan Davis, WR/S Alante Rhoden

KEY RETURNERS: QB Brandon Hawkins, RB Ish Witter, WR Marcus Mosley, OL Gary Brown, OL Zayn Itayem, OL Don Shepard, OL Maurice Faedo

SPRING FOCUS: The Ravens, according to coach Emanuel, lose a lot of speed with the departure of Holloway, so they will have to rely heavier on Hawkins (1,214 passing yards), plus his main target, Mosley, who is already getting interest from Division I colleges. "Our strength will be our offensive line," Emanuel said. "We're going to be a downhill running team." That's because Alonso returns four of its five starting offensive linemen from 2011. Junior RB Witter (507 rushing yards, five TDS) also returns. After starting the season 5-0 a year ago, the Ravens struggled, including district losses to Plant and Wharton. "We're going to have to play some smash-mouth ball this year," Emanuel said. "We're going to need guys to come off the ball and just hit people. We have to play every down because we limped home to the finish line. We have to build on that strong start to stay competitive."

Berkeley Prep

COACH: Dominick Ciao

2011 RECORD: 12-1

KEY LOSSES: RB Nelson Agholor, QB Destin Nichols, LB Schyler Miles, DE Reggie Barnes, DE Tyler Davis, WR/FS Christian Hardegree, OL/DL Kenny Barrett.

KEY RETURNERS: TB/LB Chris Williams, OL Rob Paine, OL/DL Jared Shimberg, DL David Wright.

SPRING FOCUS: Ciao, who starts his sixth season as coach at Berkeley Prep and 23rd overall, is focusing on getting to know personnel and working on fundamentals. The Buccaneers graduated 14 seniors from last season's team that lost to American Heritage in the Class 3A state semifinals. The departure of superstar RB Agholor and four-year starter QB Nichols leaves two major openings on offense. Sophomore Brad Mayes has the inside track to start at quarterback and Williams, who is a sophomore, is expected to see plenty of time at tailback and defensive back. Mayes saw some varsity time last season and Williams started as a freshman. "Until we go through spring, we will stress fundamentals; blocking and tackling," Ciao said. "We are going to do the same things on offense (multiple sets) and defense (4-3) and adjust as we go through spring. Our numbers have increased each year. We have about 50 (players) out.''
