LUTZ — Alonso running back Ish Witter could think of only one word after his squad’s 12-7 win at Steinbrenner.
“Mistakes,” Witter said. “I think we did excellent in the second half. It’s just those mistakes we have to minimize.”
The senior ran for 127 yards on 20 carries, including a 6-yard bulldozing rush up the middle in the fourth quarter to give the Ravens (1-1) their first lead of the contest.
The night started slowly for Witter, who was held to 4 yards on his first four carries before exploding for a 30-yard run in the second quarter.
“Again, mistakes,” Witter said. “Times I should have kept it wide and turned it in. There were times my linemen were opening holes, but I wasn’t reading off them. Just mistakes.”
Alonso coach Brian Emanuel said he knew it was just a matter of time before his workhorse running back broke loose.
“He’s the motor that makes this car go,” Emanuel said. “He’s a guy we can put at fullback or tailback, and he’s a warrior. He won’t stop, and I think that showed in the second half.”
The Warriors (0-2) took a 7-0 lead when senior Shyheem Barthel scampered for 27 of his 106 yards in the contest to cap Steinbrenner’s opening drive.
The Ravens answered when quarterback Chris Oladokun hit Zantavius Shower on a 4-yard strike just before halftime to close the score to 7-6.
Alonso took advantage of a critical Warriors mistake when a long snap sailed over punter TJ Broecker’s head, putting the Ravens inside the Warriors’ 10-yard line and setting up Witter’s decisive blow.
“We capitalized well, and we also had a couple of drives stall because our kicker is out of town, so we couldn’t kick the ball,” Emanuel said. “This is the kind of game where you’re just trying to get out of town with a win, and we did.”
Alonso’s defense gave Steinbrenner little room to operate after the home team’s opening drive, recording four sacks, forcing two turnovers and allowing only 45 yards of total offense.
Next week, Alonso takes on East Bay on Thursday night, while Steinbrenner travels to Spoto on the same night.
