Zero. Zilch. Nothing.
Those words all described the number of points Plant mustered in the fourth quarter of the Jaguar Holiday Classic championship game against Academy of the Holy Names as the Jaguars shut down the Panthers in a decisive 42-31 victory Friday afternoon.
"When is the last time Plant had only 31 points?" Holy Names coach Melissa Ganther said. "We made them take some shots they didn't want to take. We kept them off the boards and put pressure on their shooters and we hit shots when we had to."
The Jaguars have relied on the terrific play of sisters Amanda and Ashley McWilliams, but against the Panthers, Holy Names also received solid play from several others. Forward Victoria Martinez (six points) did an admirable job against Plant's superior size in the paint, with Panthers forwards Zayna Beckles and Reggine Brown held to a combined 12 points.
The Jaguars (11-2) led 32-31 to start the fourth quarter, but Plant didn't have an answer for Holy Names' defense, which trapped and pressed for the final eight minutes.
Holy Names went on a decisive 12-0 run as Plant (11-2) went scoreless for the final 10 minutes.
The McWilliams sisters combined for 20 points and nine steals.
Kelly Brennan led the Panthers with 13 points.
