Lennard: Esteva working overtime to accomplish goals

RUSKIN -

Abraham Esteva has a 3.3 grade-point average. He often works 40 hours a week at a car wash. Sometimes he gets up at the crack of dawn to run and lift weights.

Every day after school - before working at the car wash - he plays on the defensive and offensive lines for Lennard High.

He is, in his own words, "loving life."

When asked how he doesn't lose his marbles amid his hectic schedule, he grins like he couldn't be happier that a total stranger is interested in his life.

He answers without a shred of doubt.

"I know that my school and football are going to give me a chance to go to college, which is what I really want," said Esteva, who couldn't play football until high school because there wasn't enough money to pay for youth football. "I also know that working at the car wash helps my family. And I know that lifting weights and running gets me stronger and faster for football."

As for lifting weights, Esteva (5-foot-10, 205 pounds) is gifted. From benching 135 pounds as a seventh-grader, Esteva benched 350 in the spring. As for running, Esteva, after pushing through seven miles several times a week on the treadmill, is arguably the most fit Longhorns player, beating his teammates when they sprint at the end of practice.

When Lennard coach George Edington talks about the senior, he grins a lot like Esteva and says, "Abraham is so eager to do what we ask that it's tough to get more than three words out of him. The most I usually get is two words: 'Yes sir' or 'No sir.'"

Edington said it's a strong possibility Esteva might be able to play lower-division college football.

"It's still great to dream (about the pros)," Esteva said. "But playing right now and getting a shot at college, that's a great thing. That's awesome."
