Jesuit: Bennett's speed a benefit from wherever he is

TAMPA -

If people were to follow Jesuit senior Miles Bennett around practice, they might see him rotate from one unit to the next. That's because Bennett will be used at several positions this season.

Bennett will primarily play running back, but also will line up as a slot receiver, be a returner on special teams, and see time at linebacker and safety on defense.

Bennett said he welcomes playing various positions.

"We're going to do a little of everything," he said. "I'm new to defense, but I can make that up with my speed. I can be more aggressive (with receivers) because I can catch up with my speed."

Bennett averaged 5.7 yards per carry last season as a backup and ended the season with 223 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries. On special teams, he averaged 21 yards per return, totaling 189 yards.

"My biggest asset is my feet, my speed," he said. "I can hit the outside and I can go because sometimes the middle will be clogged up."

"He gives us a true breakaway threat," Coach James Harrell said. "He's more of a straight-line runner, but he likes to bounce."

Bennett also medaled in track and field last season en route to helping Jesuit finish 19th overall at the Class 2A state meet. Bennett placed fourth in the 100 meters and seventh in the 200 at state and was a member of Jesuit's seventh-place 4x400 relay team. He was named to the Tribune's All-Hillsborough County Boys Track and Field second-team in the 100 meters.

Harrell said Bennett will be vital to Jesuit's run-first strategy on offense.

"We'll run some draws, some trap and a toss with him," he said.

Harrell said when a player of Bennett's ability comes along, it gives coaches an opportunity to use him at different positions.

"He's a physical specimen," he said. "His speed off the edge with (senior linebacker) Anthony (Harrell) gives you the ability to chase the ball back inside."

James Harrell played nine seasons of professional football, with seven spent in the NFL at linebacker.

"Linebacker is new to him, but he's so strong and fast you can work with him," he said. "I can teach him how to be a linebacker."
