Wehunt Wins 3rd Title In Row

NEW PORT RICHEY - Sickles High's Derek Wehunt and Mitchell's Kelli Williams won individual titles Saturday at the Class 4A-District 4 cross country meet at J.B. Starkey Wilderness Park.

Wehunt won his third straight district title, kicking in down the straightaway to pass Sarasota High's Jonathan Lanning for the title. Wehunt, who trailed much of the race, won with a time of 16:08. Lanning clocked in at 16:17.

Williams, a sophomore, upset East Lake High's vaunted Katherine McMeekin for the victory. Williams won her first district with a 20:34. McMeekin was second with a 20:38. Durant High's Grace Van De Grift took third in 20:49.

Sarasota Riverview won the girls team title with 73 points. Palm Harbor University was second with 109, followed by Sickles (131) and Gaither (139). Host Mitchell was sixth with 164.

The Sarasota boys won the team title with 45. Countryside was second with 69. Sickles was third with 76, while Mitchell (167) was sixth and Durant (200) was eighth.

The top six girls teams, the top eight boys teams and the top 15 individuals qualified for the upcoming Class 4A regional Saturday at Winter Haven.
