LITHIA -- Newsome's inexperience was nowhere in sight as the Wolves, who returned only six starters from last season, defeated the visiting Longhorns 35-14 behind the strong running of sophomore Conner Powers.

Powers rushed 13 times for 119 yards and three touchdowns, with most of his work coming in the first half. On the Wolves' first drive, Powers rushed on six of Newsome's first seven plays, scoring from the 5-yard line on the opening drive.

"We have a bunch of offensive linemen going both ways right now," Powers said. "So I know I have to help by running hard for them just like they are blocking hard for me."

Lennard answered quickly behind two nice passes from Andrew Burdick, who connected with Brandon Stephens for a 39-yard score.

From there, however, it was the Wolves' rushing attack and strong defense that proved the difference. The Wolves' lone completion came on their second drive on a 14-yard touchdown strike from senior Robby Young to Vince Pennington. Powers added two more rushing touchdowns on 2- and 5-yard runs.

"Conner is a workhorse," Wolves coach Kenneth Hiscock said. "And we are going to get a lot from him this year."

Senior Evan O'Connor scored the Wolves' final touchdown on a 2-yard rush, and the Wolves received good rushing efforts from Devin Williams with 40 yards and Conner's brother Keller Powers adding 36 yards.

The Wolves' defense was anchored by some solid play including an interception by Andy Suslavich, a crushing blow on Burdick by Newsome senior linebacker Trenton Cornwell, and two sacks from Frank Marin.

Lennard's second score came in the final minute of the game on a rushing touchdown by Burdick. Burdick finished with 108 passing yards, but struggled to find receivers in the second half.
