Goaltender Andrey Vasilevskiy, the 19th overall pick in the 2012 draft, is on his way to North America to join the Lightning.
A report on Russian website sport.ru said Vasilevskiy turned down an offer to remain with Salavat of the Kontinental Hockey League and intends to sign a contract with the Lightning. The 20-year-old led Salavat to the KHL semifinals this season, posting a 9-9 postseason record with a 1.99 goals against average and .934 save percentage.
Vasilevskiy’s two-year contract with Salavat expired Wednesday, making him eligible to sign a contract with the Lightning. Those talks are taking place now.
“We continue our discussions and are hopeful we can reach a deal soon,’’ Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman said in a text message when asked about the report.
Vasilevskiy’s agent, Rollie Hedges, did not immediately return a message.
