Brandon Spikes, who once tried to gouge an opponent’s eyes while playing for the Florida Gators, did some farewell poking this week to his former pro team and its followers.
During a Twitter rant that touched some nerves among New England faithful – whom he referred to as “MassHoles” – the NFL linebacker wrote that he spent “4 years a slave” playing under Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Keep in mind, Spikes earned $3.21 million after signing a rookie contract in 2009, when he was a second-round draft pick of the Patriots. He signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills in March.
His tweets brought ugly responses from Patriots fans, who called him a “traitor” and “whiny baby” before turning racist and profane. Other tweets came from observers simply amazed with the analogy.
• “Name one slave who agreed to terms with a plantation owner & got a signing bonus.”
• “If making millions of dollars to play a game for the Pats constitutes slavery, Brandon Spikes is the luckiest slave in U.S. history.”
• “That one time ... when Brandon Spikes was drugged and then sold to the New England Patriots (in the 2nd round)? Heartbreaking.”
• “3 AFC Championships must be real slavery. You really think you’re even getting to the playoffs with the Bills?”
Spikes, 26, apparently recognized he stirred up a nest, but didn’t back down, noting he was “still blocking MassHoles.”
“They think im being cocky but im only being honest,” he posted.
Spikes, who signed a $3.25 million deal with the Bills, parted New England on less-than-glorious terms. He was placed on injured reserve just before the AFC Championship Game against Denver after showing up late for practice.
The Patriots and Bills, of course, are rivals in the AFC East Division and will face each other twice this season, another topic for trash talk.
“It’s icing on my cake to hand the #Patriots two big L’s this year. #justwatch,” Spikes posted.
