Zephyrhills High graduate Kristin Donahue won the Crystal River Memorial Day Triathlon May 23 at Fort Island Gulf Beach.

Donahue, a world-class triathlete, won the female race with a time of 1:11:49.6. Meanwhile, Palm Harbor's Lucas Caron, 17, won the overall race in 1:02.35.8.

Gainesville residents swept the masters field. Tom Lowery won the men's masters with a 1:06.08.2 and Karyn Austin took the women's title with a 1:17:16. Williston's Team Dale Haze and the Champions won the relay race with a time of 1:12:09.1.

Donahue, 21, won her first title in the Crystal River Sprint event. The University of Florida junior, majoring in elementary education, finished second at Crystal River in the past.

"It feels really good to win at Crystal River," she said. "It was windy. I love a strong wind. I took the lead among the women before the bike. I plan to compete in the world triathlon this September in Australia."

Donahue is also a member of the Tri-Gators, the Florida triathlon team, and finished fourth in the world triathlon event in 2007 in Germany.

Land O' Lakes resident Jeff Hill, a fireman for the City of Tampa, was second overall with a 1:02:43.2 clocking.

"I took second during the bike," said Hill. "It's a good course."
