USF men get away with one against Stetson

TAMPA — Perhaps guilty of having one eye on Monday night’s game against Oklahoma State, the University of South Florida Bulls clawed to a tougher-than-expected 72-63 win against Stetson on Friday night in the Sun Dome.

The Bulls will welcome No. 7 Oklahoma State and its outstanding guard Marcus Smart to Tampa next week and were nearly defeated by winless Stetson.

Asked if his team was guilty of looking ahead, coach Stan Heath was adamant.

“We should be in jail,” he said. “Lock us up, throw away the key. When they played Memphis on TV (on Tuesday), we came back to practice and that’s all they were talking about. I was like, ‘Wait, wait, timeout. We play Stetson. Let’s get our minds on Stetson.’ I tried everything.”

It wasn’t until a series of highlight plays by Bulls guard Corey Allen Jr. late in the second half that it felt like USF (4-0) had the game won.

Stetson led 41-35 early in the second half, but the Bulls slowly fought their way back.

Allen has been a key scorer this season and Heath talked with Allen during a crucial point late in the game to ask for that extra something special.

With the Bulls trailing 57-56 with 6:07 to play, Allen scored 12 of the Bulls’ final 16 points. He finished with a team-high 19 points to go with six steals.

.“During that stretch of the game, coach Heath pulled me aside and just told me to step up, point blank,” Allen said. “That’s what I did.”
