Bulls edge UCF in overtime

Published:

ORLANDO — University of South Florida point guard Shemiye McClendon admitted his heart stopped for a few beats as UCF’s Calvin Newell hoisted a potential game-winning full-court heave as time expired.

Newell’s shot hit the back of the rim and fell away, ending a bizarre 79-78 USF overtime win in front of 6,108 fans at CFE Arena.

USF (12-11, 3-7 AAC) had led most of the game but the Knights made a late push and took a 70-68 lead before Victor Rudd’s left-handed runner in the lane tied the game with 10.2 seconds left in regulation. Newell’s shot to avoid overtime fell short.

True to the game’s form, USF dominated early in overtime, with Rudd scoring the Bulls’ first six points before UCF (9-11, 1-8) rallied.

Knights guard Isaiah Sykes drove into the lane with just a few seconds left on the clock, but John Egbunu rose and blocked Sykes’ attempt. McLendon collected the rebound and sprinted toward the basket and was bumped by UCF’s Kasey Wilson with 0.2 seconds left. Because USF was in the double bonus, McLendon would have free-throw shots to win the game.

“I thought it was legit because there was contact,” USF coach Stan Heath said. “He knocked our player down. Our player had possession of the floor and there was contact. It was incidental contact, but it was contact.”

After a review, the referees reset the clock to 0.8 seconds.

McLendon made the go-ahead free-throw and intentionally missed the second.

“We made so many big plays in that game, I don’t even know where to start,” Heath said.

Rudd finished with a game-high 25 points.
