TAMPA — Tampa again has been named a finalist to host the Women’s Final Four and will bid for the event in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The event was held at the Forum in 2008 and will be hosted by Tampa in 2015.
“We’re flattered to be in the finalist pool,’’ Tampa Bay Sports Commission executive director Rob Higgins said. “It seemed to go over really well (in 2008) and it’s a great event, one we love having here. I think they were impressed with how the overall community received it and we’d love to have it back.’’
Tampa declined on the option to bid for the event in 2017, probably because it is hosting the College Football Playoff championship game that January at Raymond James Stadium.
Other cities in the Women’s Final Four finalist pool for 2017-2020 are Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Houston; Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans and Pittsburgh.
Completed bids are due in May. Site visits are scheduled for August, September and October with winning bids announced in November.
