GAINESVILLE — Florida RB Matt Jones underwent blood tests after missing all of preseason practice with a viral infection.
The former Armwood High standout has started working out and is gaining back the weight he lost. But Gators coach Will Muschamp said the team is preparing to open the season on Aug. 31 against Toledo without him.
The 6-foot-2 Jones has been jogging and is back to 223 pounds, getting closer to his 226-pound playing weight. He lost as many as 10 pounds due to the virus.
With Jones out, Muschamp said the team’s top three running backs are redshirt junior Mack Brown, sophomore walk-on Mark Herndon and redshirt sophomore Valdez Showers, who moved from safety.

FSU’s Greene injures finger
TALLAHASSEE — Florida State WR Rashad Greene is day-to-day after injuring a finger during practice.
Greene, who led the Seminoles in all receiving categories last season with 57 receptions for 741 yards and six touchdowns, walked off the practice field Monday along with a trainer.
Florida State already has lost two backup receivers in the preseason. Senior Scooter Haggins has a stress fracture in his knee, and Willie Haulstead was declared academically ineligible.
