TAMPA - A Big Ten team has appeared in the Outback Bowl for 20 seasons, and a contract extension has ensured the partnership will continue another six.
The agreement, announced Friday, means a Big Ten team will play in Tampa's New Year's Day college bowl game through the 2019 season.
In a news release to announce the extension, Big Ten commissioner James E. Delany noted the conference's "large alumni base in the state" and Tampa's "premier NFL facility in Raymond James Stadium."
Since the 1996 game, the Big Ten's opponent in the bowl has come from the Southeastern Conference.
The bowl, which announced a six-year extension with title sponsor Outback Steakhouse in June, is also working on contract extensions with SEC and television partner ESPN.
This season's Outback Bowl is slated for 1 p.m. Jan. 1. at Raymond James Stadium.
