Outlook: The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Football Championship Series playoffs last season, 24-14 to Coastal Carolina. Junior quarterback Quentin Williams (Jefferson High) returns after starting seven of the final eight games in 2012 and leading the MEAC in passing efficiency with a 151.99 rating.

Outlook: All eyes will be on Holmes, who takes over his alma mater for program legend Joe Taylor, who retired at the end of 2012. A former NFL linebacker, Holmes has his work cut out for him succeeding Taylor, who had a career mark of 233-96-4. The Rattlers jump right into the spotlight, opening the season Sunday against Mississippi Valley State in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge in Orlando.

Outlook: The Owls move to Conference-USA this season after a rough final season in the Sun Belt. Still rebuilding under second-year coach Pelini, FAU has a playmaker at receiver in junior William Dukes, but is largely inexperienced. The early schedule is not kind: at Miami, at East Carolina and at South Florida in the first three games.

Coach: Ron Turner (first season)

Outlook: The Golden Panthers move to Conference-USA this season with first-year coach Ron Turner, a former NFL assistant who spent 2012 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Turner’s specialty is offense, where QB Jake Medlock returns. But the top rusher from 2012, Kedrick Rhodes, was dismissed during the offseason.
