Website data says Bucs fans are least engaged in NFL

So which NFL market has the best fans? Buccaneers followers hoping to join the debate won’t be able to count on a new ranking that says Tampa Bay has the least engaged fans.

TicketCity.com, an online ticket broker, says its list was based on an algorithm designed to identify the 2012 fans bases that engage with a team most frequently online and offline. The algorithm heavily weighed the offline metrics: home attendance, home ticket price average and percentage of stadium capacity filled.

Other factors included road attendance and road ticket price, as well as most Facebook “likes” and Twitter followers.

Using that barometer, Tampa Bay was rated the worst of the NFL’s 32 fan bases, followed by Kansas City, Miami, Jacksonville and St. Louis.

Dallas, New England, Green Bay, the New York Giants, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Denver topped the engagement rankings. Those teams had higher average ticket prices but were best at filling stadiums, the website says. Attendance figures were taken from Wikipedia and ESPN.com.

The Cowboys, Steelers and Patriots registered the most Facebook “likes,” and the Patriots, Cowboys and Jets had the most Twitter followers, according to the research. However, TicketCity says online metrics counted less because they reflected only team-sanctioned social channels, not other “fan communities.”

TicketCity offered no analysis of the results and did not include factors such as team success or market economics.
