Some surprises as Bucs release first depth chart of season

— In preparation for their preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released their first depth chart of the season.

It contains at least a couple of surprises.

The most notable is probably at cornerback, where veteran Mike Jenkins is listed at the top along with fellow projected starter Alterraun Verner but ahead of second-year pro Johnthan Banks.

Banks, the Bucs’ first pick in the 2013 draft, started all 16 games as a rookie last year, but he has mostly been playing behind Jenkins during training camp workouts at One Buc Place.

Another surprise is up front on defense, where 2011 second-round draft pick Da’Quan Bowers is now listed as a defensive tackle instead of a defensive end, which is the position he was drafted to play.

Bucs coach Lovie Smith has lauded Bowers for his work in camp so far and said his ability to play inside as well as outside could aid the Bucs as they attempt to improve their pass rush.

Another possible surprise is at running back, where Bobby Rainey is listed as the top backup behind projected starter Doug Martin, and rookie Charles Sims is rated ahead of second-year pro Mike James.

Also, at the kicker position, Connor Barth is listed as the team’s kickoff man. That spot has been handled in the past by punter Mike Koenen but Barth said earlier in camp he may add those duties this year.
