TAMPA — Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith is counting on four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Gill Byrd to get the best out of Darrelle Revis and the rest of the Bucs cornerbacks next season.

Byrd, who was named All-Pro four times during his 11-year playing career, was named the Bucs cornerbacks coach on Friday.

The San Diego Chargers all-time leader in interceptions, Byrd played his entire career in San Diego from 1983-93 and moved into the NFL coaching ranks in 2003 as a defensive assistant to Smith, who was then defensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams.

Byrd joined Smith’s Chicago Bears staff as a defensive quality control coach in 2006, was promoted to assistant defensive backs coach in 2007 and then coached Bears safeties from 2008 until Smith’s dismissal after the 2012 season.
