Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon is already warming up to the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Maddon said he recently received a phone call from Greg Schiano and the two men discovered they shared an old football bond.
"We had a great conversation,'' Maddon said. "Greg went to Bucknell and I told him I played my first college football game at Bucknell, so we started going on about that. He's very engaging and easy to talk to.''
Schiano was a standout linebacker at Bucknell in the late 1980s, 15 years after Maddon attended Lafayette College, where he dropped football after his freshman season at quarterback.
In recent years, Maddon developed a strong friendship with Raheem Morris, who was dismissed in January after three seasons as head coach of the Buccaneers. He doesn't worry about Morris feeling jilted.
"Raheem and I were very tight, but he'd be the first guy to want me to get in touch with Coach Schiano,'' Maddon said. "I plan on being Greg Schiano's biggest supporter.''
