Bucs promote QB Carpenter for Sunday's game

TAMPA – In preparation for the possibility that a sore shoulder will keep quarterback Josh Freeman from starting Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday promoted fellow quarterback Rudy Carpenter from their practice squad to the active roster.

Carpenter, an Arizona State product, spent the 2010 season working as a third quarterback behind Freeman and backup Josh Johnson and was signed to the practice squad after he was cut at the end of this preseason.

The Bucs remained hopeful Saturday that Freeman will be able to start Sunday's game at Raymond James Stadium, but after a week in which he was limited to just a few throws in practice, the team is preparing for the possibility that Johnson will have to start and Carpenter will have to relieve him if Johnson struggles or is injured.

To make room on the roster for Carpenter, the Bucs released linebacker Zac Diles.
