Bucs NFL draft position analysis: Linebacker

The Buccaneers have six selections, including the No. 7 overall pick, in the 2014 NFL draft, to be held Thursday-Saturday at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Tampa Bay has one pick in each of the seven rounds, except the fourth — that pick was sent to the Jets to complete the 2013 trade for CB Darrelle Revis. For nine consecutive days, The Tribune will analyze the team's needs at specific positions.

Linebacker

There will be competition at training camp for the starting position next to All-Pro weakside LB Lavonte David. Incumbent Mason Foster is not locked into the middle and, on the strong side, veteran Jonathan Casillas could be challenged by a draft pick. Depth is a major issue following the departures of Dekoda Watson and Adam Hayward.

On the Bucs roster

NFL

Player Ht. Wt. Age seasons

Jonathan Casillas 6-1 227 26 6

Lavonte David 6-1 233 24 3

Dane Fletcher 6-2 245 27 5

Mason Foster 6-2 242 25 4

Ka'Lial Glaud 6-2 220 23 2

Danny Lansanah 6-1 255 28 2

Damaso Munoz 5-11 219 27 1

Remaining NFL free agents

James Anderson 6-2 235 30 9

Stephen Nicholas 6-3 236 31 8

Ernie Sims 6-0 225 29 9

Dream pick

C.J. Mosley, Alabama

This active three-year starter returned three of his five career interceptions for touchdowns and displayed intriguing skills as a blitzer.

Hidden gem

Christian Kirksey, Iowa

Kirksey plays well in space and ran a dazzling 4.54 at his Pro Day, flashing the speed that new Bucs coach Lovie Smith covets at the position.

Bucs history

David and Foster were selected within the past three drafts, but the Bucs haven't chosen a linebacker in the first round since landing Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks in 1995. If Tampa Bay trades down at No. 7 and Mosley is still available, he would be difficult to pass up.

The schedule

April 30: Quarterback

May 1: Defensive back

Friday: Offensive line

Saturday: Defensive end

Sunday: Wide receiver

Monday: Defensive tackle

Tuesday: Running back

Today: Linebacker

Thursday: Tight end
