TAMPA — Bucs tight ends coach Jon Embree didn’t have a long playing career in the NFL. He lasted just two years in the league, playing 13 games for the Los Angeles Rams. But that and his three years at the University of Colorado were enough to give Embree credibility with rookie Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
“He’s done it before and it’s nice to have a coach like that,’’ Seferian-Jenkins said. “He’s the first coach I’ve had that actually played tight end in the league, and he’s really helped me out with my (receiving), my routes, my footwork, my blocking, my hand placement, my eyes. He’s really helping me take my game to the next level and I appreciate it.’’
CB Rashaan Melvin (ankle), S Dashon Goldson (ankle) and DE Ron Talley returned to practice on Sunday.
Still sitting out were CB Alterraun Verner (hamstring), CB Mike Jenkins (upper leg muscle), WR David Gettis (hamstring) and C Evan Dietrich-Smith (toe).
Dietrich-Smith said he should be ready to go for the team’s first preseason game Friday against Jacksonville.
“We had to remove part of the toenail (after he got stepped on),’’ head coach Lovie Smith said. “Once the pain leaves him he’ll be back out there.’’
PLAY OF THE DAY
Dane Fletcher is facing an uphill battle in his attempt to unseat Mason Foster as the starting middle linebacker, but if he continues to turn in plays like the one he made Sunday, he’ll win that fight.
During an 11-on-11 drill, Fletcher moved in quickly on a short Mike Glennon pass and not only did he pick it off, but he also returned it 32 yards for a touchdown, dancing around several would-be tacklers along the way.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“It’s got to be about the wins. It’s team first. That’s what Lovie is all about and that’s what I’ve always been about, and I’ll continue to be that way.’’
